Bang! Update [3]
Bang! Update [3] Its 11:42 am Eastern time and Im packing my bags. ¿Porque? The MIT pistol team is on its way to West Point in New York for a shooting competition! Yes, thats right, MIT has a pistol team, and a good one at that. In fact, last year the MIT pistol team won the National Championships, beating out Army, Navy, Coast Guard, and a slew of other teams. Geeks with guns, gotta love it. Id never shot before coming to MIT, but pistol seemed like fun. Shooting is a useful skill, no experience was necessary, MIT is awesome at pistol, and the range is on campus, why not join? Ive been shooting since September and have been progressively getting better and better. I suggest that anybody considering pistol get involved. Just e-mail the coach (you can find him here: http://web.mit.edu/pistol/www/). *************** From the Hotel *************** We had our first round of shooting this evening against West Point, but first we had to get there. What we discovered is that a combination of hearing protection and iPod headphones makes a great set of noise-canceling headphones! Sina sporting the noise canceling headphones I have a physics final on Monday (8.01L) so I studied a bit on the bus, as evidenced by the following picture: We went straight from the bus into the range, which is, unlike ours, housed in a castle. Seriously, castle. The event shot tonight is called Air Pistol. The rules are pretty straightforward: 60 shots, one hour and forty-five minutes, best possible score of 600 (10 per target). West Points air pistol range is 18 lanes, so nine of our shooters shot tonight. I wasnt one of them (I shoot tomorrow) so I got to take a bunch of pictures! They use electronic targets, meaning they have cooler targets in their range than we do in ours. The white part of the target is stationary but the black center is actually on a roll. After you shoot the black center the computer records your shot, displays it on a monitor sitting next to you, and then the black center reels away, yielding a fresh new target. Of course, if you miss the black center and hit the white part you get to stare at your missed shot for the rest of the match. Incentive to hit the center, eh? Fu shooting during the air competition The monitors display your shot points, where you shot, and where the center of your grouping is. It also gives you a quantitative measure of distance from center. Eddie shooting during the air competition Everyone shooting did well, with several personal bests. Again, I shoot tomorrow, so all I can do now is wait, blog, and demonstrate how my shirt says TIM in the mirror. Until tomorrow . . . **************** Back at MIT **************** Ive decided to take a quick break from studying for physics to finish up this post. If youll recall where we left off, I was in the the hotel room after our first day of shooting. Well, after a free breakfast (courtesy of Holiday Inn Express) we headed back to West Point to shoot some more. This is when I was able to shoot. I shot in the first air pistol round of the morning. My spot on the bench Me shooting I shot a 513 for my first air round, which was 3 points shy of my personal best. I had heard that there were going to be more air rounds though, so I asked around and it turned out that I would get to shoot again. Now, theres no real benefit to me shooting again, except practice and getting comfortable shooting in match-conditions, but I wanted to see if I could increase my score. Turns out I did, not by much, but I shot a 517, one point above my personal best. The rest of the day was spent watching movies in the shooting lounge (Equilibrium, Pirates 3, and Die Hard) before packing up, thanking Army, and loading onto the bus. Before we left, however, I was informed of something interesting that was hiding downrange of the other shooting range. What was it? TERRORISTS! West Point practices on terrorists! Now, I knew there had to be some explanation to this, theres no good reason to practice on terrorists if you can practice on targets, so after we asked around we discovered that West Point has something called a Combat Assault Squad. Its a sport, just like pistol, only they get to shoot shotguns, M16s, run through obstacle courses, and shoot terrorists. Weve officially decided that MIT needs a combat assault squad. On the way back to MIT we stopped at a restaurant called Cracker Barrel. Looking at the menu I saw a half-pound burger with bacon, but I wasnt sure that would be enough food. I asked our waiter if he good add an extra patty to it. Well, its never been done, but Im sure we can do that, Bwahahahaha. What I ended up with was a one-pound burger that was absolutely delicious. People had their doubts as to whether I could finish it or not, but it turns out that I was the first one done, and then I had dessert. I think all those super burritos from Annas have conditioned my stomach enough to withstand mass quantities of food. Back on the bus after a group picture we continued the 3.5 hour bus ride back to MIT, providing ample time for a nap. Well, actually, it would have been 3.5 hours, but several hours into the ride/my nap the bus started slowing down. I look around, confused, and nobody else seems to know whats going on. All of a sudden our charter bus is pulling a U-turn in this tiny little deserted road in the pitch black. Turns out wed gotten lost and had traveled almost an hour out of the way. Wonderful. I went back to sleep. I woke up again and realized that the people sitting across from me had tied my shoes together. I untied them and went back to sleep. I woke up again. My shoes were tied together, again. I untied them, again, and went back to sleep. I woke up again. This time we were actually back in Cambridge! A minute later we were back at MIT, and then half an hour later I was back in my dorm, exhausted, and ready for sleep. We ended up losing to Army overall, but we did win in air pistol. It was a very fun trip, lots of good food, good company, and good stories. I hope you enjoyed reading about it.

6 Important Branding Tips to Keep in Mind When Going Global
Taking your brand global is an exciting prospect but also a significant challenge. Establishing and growing your brand in your own country is challenging enough, but expanding it into other parts of the world will present hurdles different from any you've experienced before. Related: The brand manager's guide to brand extension One of the principal challenges is maintaining consistency as the brand spreads into other cultures and regions. Being consistent, though, is key to success. That's not to say you should ignore the differences between customers in different marketsââ¬âyou need to meet customer needs while still keeping your brand consistent, which is easier said than done. Maintaining a strong brand while going global requires substantial research and planning, as well as careful monitoring. Here are 6 branding tips to remember when you're going global. 1. Establish brand guidelines Before attempting to expand a brand globally, the company should have well-established, consistent brand guidelines. It needs to distribute these guidelines to everyone who will represent the brand in any way and ensure adherence. What should be included in brand guidelines? They cover the overall definition of the brand, visual style and content style. That's not to say all of these elements need to be included in the same document, but they should all be well-defined. The guideline should define the brand's values, mission and vision statement and include a description of the key messages you want to send, as well as the brand's personality. These guidelines should include rules for using the company's logos, colors, fonts and any other visual elements. They should also describe its preferred voice and tone, any words that should be used and any to be avoided. The use of these guidelines must be enforced throughout the company to keep the brand consistent. This will be of immense value, since research shows that consistent brands expect to earn 23% more revenue annually than inconsistent brands. 2. Emphasize your values Your brand guidelines should include a description of company values, but they should be emphasized through every aspect of the global expansion. This strategy consists of both customer-facing and internal elements and will help the brand maintain its essence, even if the details of how the company operates are different in new markets. Making sure everyone in the company understands its values is crucial to consistency. Brand values can serve as a guidepost when trying to determine whether something is on brand or not. While representations of the brands should still be subject to review, understanding brand values can help keep ideas on track in the early stages. 3. Be aware of culture & language differences Before expanding into a new region, a company should take time to research any aspects of culture or language that may affect how their brand is perceived. The business should also conduct a legal assessment to avoid inadvertently breaking any rules or regulations. If your company is seeking to form partnerships and make business acquaintances overseas, it's important to have a thorough understanding of the country's business culture. For example, in Singapore, it's important to talk about any successes as a team effort. The interests of the group as a whole are generally put ahead of individual interests thereââ¬âsomething you'd want to keep in mind if you were trying to create a mutually beneficial partnership. When translating a brand into another language and culture, miscommunications are easily possible. If a company doesn't take sufficient precautions, it risks making a faux pas that could damage the brand. KFC fell victim to this issue when it expanded into China in the 80s. The company translated its slogan "finger-lickin' good" to "eat your fingers off." While KFC eventually recovered from the mistake, this slogan did not send the right message. 4. Keep it customer-focused While you need to maintain brand consistency, you also need to ensure that you communicate your brand in a way that will resonate with the new customers you're attempting to reach. You may need to make small adjustments to better appeal to customers in different regions, as well. Determining what you can change to appeal to a new set of customers and what you can't alter without sacrificing brand consistency is critical. KFC provides us another exampleââ¬âbut this time, in a positive way. In the 70s, KFC created a campaign in Japan called "Kentucky for Christmas" that encouraged Japanese customers to go to KFC on the holiday. The campaign was a huge success because it capitalized on the fact that there weren't many established Christmas traditions in the country. KFC still catered to one of the traditions that did exist in Japan, however, by including a special cake in its Christmas meal bundles. 5. Optimize your approval process Companies should have an established approval process in place before expanding globally. This process helps employees to easily submit materials and enables company leadership to ensure brand consistency. A complicated process can lead to off-brand materials slipping through the cracks. Once they do, these misbranded materials can spread, because people who see them will assume they're acceptable. Using a brand templating platform like Lucidpress can streamline the approval process, which encourages employees to get quick approval of their materials and move their projects forward. 6. Promote consistent internal communications To orchestrate a global brand expansion, a company needs a strong internal communications system to ensure that all offices, departments and employees are on the same page. You need a reliable communications system to inform everyone in the company of updates to branding guidelines, information about new products, details about new promotional products and more. Internal disconnect creates a risk of brand inconsistency. Businesses should create an internal communications plan that includes information about communication objectives, target audiences, available channels and more. They must then monitor their progress to ensure that their internal communications are effective. Also, everyone within a company who needs access to logos and other brand materials should have access to them. Using a cloud-based system like Lucidpress (through which employees can download logos from anywhere at any time) can resolve this issue seamlessly. Key takeaway Expanding a brand globally is, of course, no small feat. A global brand has many moving parts that all face different challenges based on their location. Despite these differences, the branding must be consistent throughout the entire company. Achieving this kind of cohesiveness requires a well-defined brand and open communication about what the brand is to everyone in the company. That information and meaning can then be communicated effectively to customers across the globe. Want to know more about the power of brand consistency? Early forms featured brass-bands playing a ragtime and swing style of music, with improvisation, and unique and syncopated rhythm and blues. Within music, syncopated means offbeat rhythm. Alexis de Tocqueville a French visitor said the civilized man is turned back into a savage (Doc 5). Since he is a visitor to the country he will say whatever he wants or thinks about the situation and it will not affect him. With these examples it shows that the grimy factories were not good working conditions. The increasing number of factories meant that more and more workers needed to work and all of the factories. Robert Southey an English Romantic poet wrote ââ¬Å"where you hear from within the everlasting din of machinery, when the bell rings it is to call the wretches to their work instead of their prayers. â⬠He also talks about the ââ¬Å"frequent buildings among them as large as convents without their beautyâ⬠(Doc 2). Since he is a romantic poet he will not like the changes that the machines have taken on the beauty of the city and the holiness of the people. Manchesterââ¬â¢s people did not like what they were doing but the government thought that this was just a glorious thing happening. Thomas B. Macaulay a Member of Parliament wrote that this was helping everyone being better fed, lodged, clothed and attended in sickness (Doc 3). He likes machinery because he does not have to work the long hours in the factories and gets the products that are coming from them. He does not comprehend the long strained laboring that it took to make the products. This major issue was not fully understood by the government because they just see the products and the money they are making. They do not know what the people are doing to make that happen. The industrial revolution hit Manchester, England and it caught on quickly and it became a leading manufacturing producer in the world but it came with a price. Issues with such a large population and manufacturing growth were filthy facilities, strained labor, and deprived the happiness of life. These results changed the way industries forever.
